Chapter 20

Christmas was fast approaching. Becca searched the basement for their fake tree. She liked having a real one, but Boone had been too busy with calls to go cut one with her, and she wasn’t going to go alone. They had bought a fake tree years ago, and kept it in case they couldn’t make time for a real one. She hated the way the artificial branches never looked quite right and missed the pine smell a real tree provided. It didn’t bother Boone to use the fake tree, and Becca scowled thinking about how little he’d been home. He didn’t even get the lights up on the house, and she was still trying to decide if she wanted to tackle that project.

She found the tree box buried under the rest of their holiday decorations. After moving the other totes out of the way, she brought what she needed upstairs. Becca turned on some Christmas music to set the holiday mood while she got the tree set up. The last of the decorations were on by the time Boone got home. He laid down on the couch and watched Becca finish.

“Long day?” she asked with her back to him.

“Yeah. Garage fire. I can’t believe all the stuff people pack into such little spaces.”

Becca stood back to look at the tree.

“It looks like it leans a little to the left,” Boone said.

“Then you can fix it,” she replied, slamming the lid on the tote. She picked it up and went downstairs to put it away. If he wasn’t going to help her, she wasn’t going to stick around to listen to his criticism. Becca found the lights for the outside of the house and went back upstairs. Boone was still on the couch, but had turned off the music and was watching football.

Becca got on her jacket, hat and gloves. She grabbed the pile of lights and went to the garage to find the ladder. She would get the decorating done alone if she had to.

The first string of lights went up easily. The second string was tangled up. Once Becca got them straightened out, she plugged them in and half the strand didn’t work. Becca threw them out and grabbed the next string. She got up on the ladder and realized she had used the last of the light clips, and needed to get more. Becca sighed and pulled the first string off the house. She didn’t want some of them up if the whole house wasn’t done.

Becca wound the lights into a ball and left them in the garage with the ladder. Boone wasn’t in the living room, but she could smell something cooking in the oven and heard the shower running. She took a deep breath and went into the kitchen to warm up some hot chocolate. Becca heated her water in the microwave and began searching the pantry for the cocoa mix. The microwave buzzed and she still hadn’t found it.

“Need some help?” Boone asked.

“Yeah. Where’s all our hot chocolate mix? I can’t find it anywhere.
